Tamara: As near as I can tell, Stannding Buffalo 11 is the one who was the son of Orphan, and is the one who would not figtht during the 1862 Uprising. Mark Diedrich wrote a biography on him. According to Diedrich, he committed suicide some years later. His final resting place is to this day, is unknown. type chief Standing Buffalo in the Google search browser. Oneof the web sites gives his biography and the refeerence by Mark diedrich's book on him.

This is what the family papers of Hoksinawasteka say
Hoksina wasteka is the brother to StarFace/Orphan Hoksina wasteka is the father of Matohin Sipto Oyankedutawin and two others
Sipto and Matohin are found int eh pictures with McLaughlin and are called the Cheifs of Devils Lake in one photo and family of Standing buffalo.
Hoksina Wasteka and his brother Star Face / Orphan were present at TraverseDesSiouix and it was a story that travels through the ages into the live of John Bear or Mato Ite Wakan. Their Brother must be Burning Earth although our papers do not mention it.
Standing Buffalo who suicides in Canada is the nephew of Hoksina Wasteka and Sipto is his cousin. Sipto leads the people back from Canada or at least some of them to Devils Lake.
Sipto's sister is Oyankedutawin and she is the mother of John Bear or Mato Ite Wakan. he was born in 1863 and his brother was born in Monatana. One of his sisters stays in Canada and never returns. Clearly this is a result of the patter of the Standing Buffalo Tiyospaye as they flee and then return or stay.
The only points that Diedrich is wrong on are the family relationships as he has handsome one as the brother of the younger standing buffalo who suicides.

The Bear is doing well, this years christmas pictures will be special since he watched closely as I trimmed the fur on the dog before our holiday company came and later tried the same on himself. Three clips with the scissors was all it took to require a trip to the salon for a desperate repair job. He looks like he is home on leave from the armed forces...

I have a Jennie Standing Buffalo that is shown to be a daughter of Sunkawaste or David Kitteau. She was alive at his passing in 1923 and I believe she was born in 1880 and her mother was Wisiha. Any idea if she is related?

My Grandmother is the g/g/grandaughter of Old Standing Buffalo! Her grandpa was a man who is the grandson of HoksinaWasteka... who lived in your neck of the woods after the Standing Buffalo Band fled and then some returned to Devils Lake. I am guessing that you have already read Mark Diedrich's book? If not, I have a copy and when I a spare moment I will look in it for you if you like! Later cousin! Tamara

All: I am new here, but I read this thread with great interest. I also read the book of Mark Diedrich about Standing Buffalo. My question is: in most books about the famous Sisseton chief you can find the same old photograph allegedly showing Standing Buffalo, rather young in appearance. I recently discovered at the Minnesota Historical society Archives that there is another photo, also labeled Standing Buffalo, which seems to be made by the same photographer at the same time. Which one is the famous Sisseton chief Standing Buffalo? I tend to believe he must be the older man, perhaps the younger individual is his son? Can anyone help on this? Thank you Dietmar

I still haven't gotten a chance to read Mark Deidrichs book, but my brother was in the MNHS today doing some research and he found an article that has an obiturary and it states: "Ma-kaw-kee-day, (Burning Earth) the last survivor of Wa-pa-sha's band of Indians who fought with the the Americans against the Sacs and Foxes at Bad Axe, died on Tuesday, July 9th. The old man was blind for a long time and depended altogether on the charity of the peole here for a livin. As near as can be found out in regard to his age he must have been at leat 90 years old. He leaves no children but an estimable old woman to mourn." this could not be Standing Buffalo's brother could it. just wondering any help would be appreciated. I know i really need to read the book that may shed some light on this, so just wondering from anyone who has read it if they could tell me more.

Hi Roddickfan,
according to Mark Diedrich Burning Earth, the brother of Standing Buffalo´s father Orphan, died in 1862 on a trip to find buffalos on the Mouse River. He had been the leading chief of the Northern Sissetons for over 30 years since the late 1820s. He had another brother, Little Soldier. Burning Earth had a son called Cause of Hail (Wasukiye), who also took the name Burning Earth II and lead the band after his father´s death.
There also was a Mdewakanton Dakota called Mah-Kah-Kee-Dah or "Burnt Earth", who lived until 1884. It was he who fought at the battle of Bad Axe in 1832.
Regards,
Dietmar
